Johnson grew up in a non-musical household but knew from an early age that the piano would become his lifeline. The instrument allowed him to explore and express himself as a young boy growing up, before it began to help him communicate with other people. By writing and performing his own music he was able to express himself to an even wider audience. He soon discovered how to get complete strangers relating to their own experiences through his music. Johnson is praised for not over-complicating his compositions and for giving emotive live performances of his own works.
